Celebrating the Class of 2021
Dear Graduating Students,
I am writing to check in about commencement, to give you what little certainty we have in these ridiculously uncertain times. First and foremost, we are determined to have commencement, in person, on the weekend of May 14 and 15, 2021. What that looks like will depend upon the situation we face in May – the city’s COVID rates, vaccination rates and its restrictions. And we’re going to remain flexible, because that’s the best way to maximize whatever freedom we’ll ultimately be given by the circumstances.
- We will be doing our commencement activities on Loyola’s campus, probably spreading out in creative ways. (We know that we won’t be allowed to have a single ceremony with thousands of graduates and guests, so creativity will be key.)
- Whatever happens, we will be handing you your diploma cover, in person, and we are prioritizing having that moment happen in front of your family and guests.
- We are working to reimagine as many of the events leading up to Commencement as we safely can, to give you chances to engage with your friends in smaller events.
- We realize that you and your guests might not all be able to travel to join us so we will offer virtual options to celebrate your achievements.
We’ve gotten very helpful input from students as we make our plans. If any of you have an idea to share, please email email@example.com.
If we get this right, commencement will be even sweeter – because (as the Jesuits teach us) we’re going to focus on what really matters and let go of the rest.
All my best,
